Woebot is very careful to keep reminding ‘clients’ that it is a robot and that no human monitors their responses. The warning is repeated regularly, and the transparency is not just for ethical reasons. Clinical research psychologist Dr Alison Darcy, who designed Woebot in collaboration with Stanford University’s School of Medicine Psychiatry and Ai departments, believes there is a ‘value proposition’ for people in knowing they are talking to a robot – they are more likely to talk frankly.1
